THE NATIONAL Planning Commission has
said that it was finalising a long-term perspective plan that outlines a clear
roadmap and strategic intentions to realize Tanzania Development Vision (TDV)
2050, officials say.
Speaking at a media orientation in
Dar es Salaam yesterday on “Partnering for Awareness and Action on TDV 2050,”
Dr Mursali Milanzi, Deputy Executive Secretary of National Planning at the
President’s Office – Planning Commission, said the long-term plan will inform a
five-year medium-term operational plan.
He said the
will subsequently be broken down into annual plans aligned with
government budgets to ensure practical and effective implementation. “The
medium-term plan will translate Vision 2050 into actionable programs, while the
annual plans will enable continuous monitoring and updates based on national
priorities and available resources,” he explained.
He said the plan was designed to guide the
country’s socio-economic transformation over the next three decades. The
orientation also featured remarks from Melissa McNeil-Barrett, UNFPA Deputy
Country Representative and Officer-in-Charge, who emphasized the critical role
of Vision 2050 in shaping an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future for
Tanzania.
She noted that the 2022 Population and Housing
Census recorded Tanzania’s population at 61.7 million, and at the current
growth rate of 3.2 percent, the population is projected to double in just 22
years, reaching roughly 123.4 million by 2044. This demographic reality, she
said, highlights the importance of integrating population data into development
planning.
“UNFPA has proudly supported the national
development planning process by strengthening systems for population data—from
census and household surveys to building institutional capacity for demographic
analysis,” McNeil-Barrett said.
“This evidence has directly shaped Vision
2050, ensuring it is people-centered and leaves no one behind.” She highlighted
that Vision 2050 champions innovation, equity, human capital development, and
environmental stewardship as its pillars, aiming to build a prosperous and
resilient Tanzania.
However, she stressed that the vision can only
succeed if it is widely understood and embraced by citizens at all levels.
“This is where today’s gathering becomes critical. The media is more than a
messenger—it is a partner, a bridge between institutions and citizens, and a
catalyst for dialogue and accountability,” she said.
Dr. Milanzi added, “Your ability to
shape narratives, amplify voices, and keep the public informed will be
instrumental in translating TDV 2050 from a policy document into a living,
breathing national movement.”
The media orientation is part of the commission’s
broader effort to engage stakeholders, raise awareness, and ensure that the
long-term goals of Vision 2050 are effectively communicated and owned by all
Tanzanians.
